"Poetry is best read while eating Doritos"

One more essay to write, which will be a compare/contrast of ekphrastic poems and how their portrayal of the sexualized woman differs. Interesting, but short essay (only 4-6 pages). No worries. Just waiting for the Prof to ok my thesis. This reminds me of a cartoon I made a while ago (see "Email" below).

I've decided (at Chris' suggestion) to link to cartoons instead of putting them into the blog. So here's a few new ones that I made last night while waiting for my Prof to email me back.

  • Stomach

  • God's 11th Commandment

  • AFV

  • Anyway... That's it for me. Now, get back to work!

"It's not like WH Auden said, 'And this poem is about having bum fun with other men.' If it did, no one would read it... but I would." -prof

Two posts in one day. I must be insane or procrastinating.

I'm eating dinner before I go to work, and watching my hamster (Chipmunk) going crazy in her cage. She is a two+ year old, blind dwarf hamster, and tries to escape from her cage all day every day. It's sad. But I also kind of sympathize with her. Being a full-time student, I feel like I'm constantly trying to break free from the constraints that tie me down... I'm always rushing to finish yet another essay, or yet another book. I logically know that it's not that easy, but I will eventually be finished my degree. But, more closely, this session is almost over, which means another is just around the corner. I could quit (as a co-worker often suggests when I say I'm stressed), but I must be a glutton for punishment like every other student. Chipmunk also falls a lot when she tries to escape. She climbs on the top-most bars, falls and rolls down two flights of stairs. I could draw a similar conclusion with me and my essays, but I will avoid this depressing analogy, and just say that I wish my essays would be better then they always end up to be. I do enjoy schoolwork, just as I'm sure Chipmunk enjoys her wheel and her supply of food, but I wish I could just escape.
"It was as dark as armpit" -Oryx and Crake

My head feels full. It must be the end of the school session.

I have a real problem with pressing Ctrl+S when writing these blog entries, as I'm completely obsessed with saving my Word documents after every sentence. I apologize if, at any point, you log on here and see a half-formed thought - I have accidentally hit those cursed keys yet again.

I discovered yesterday that my Stone Angel essay is supposed to be 1200-1500 words. I was currently on page 4 at around 1500 words and only starting my second point. I hate being long-winded. I have since emailed the prof about my concerns, and his response was "It guidelines only. I don't count words." I thought I was bad for editing, but the point got across. I remember in first year a prof scared the class by announcing that he owns a word counting machine... oh how naive we were. And how much we have grown, as we have mastered the art of squeezing 9 pages worth of writing into 8 pages by discreetly changing the font size, margins and making the spacing 1.8 instead of 2.0.

Must continue my work now, and become acquainted with Exodus for tomorrow's class. Not to mention the other millions of things to accomplish.

Cartoon wisdom of the day, by me.

My brain feels full, as well.

"Also, kangaroos cannot walk with only one leg because there is no device such as kretches for stability and as a result it would be harder for a kangaroo to obtain food." -response to article on sexual selection

Essay #2 finished, starting my essay on the story of Sarah from the Bible and egg imagery in the Stone Angel. Fun... I'm not looking forward to reading the book for the third time, though. It was bad enough the second time knowing EVERYTHING that was going to happen.

Anyway. Last night we had a store meeting that was from 8pm-12am. Way too long to stay at the store, considering I started my shift at 4 and it was the day from hell. Oh well. I won a prize for getting 100% on a mystery shop a few months ago, which is good. It shows that, even though I'm no longer BUBBLY, I can still do my job well. So HA to you, stupid managers. *ahem*.

I'm currently reading Oryx and Crake by Atwood, and I can say that, so far, it is interesting. It must be one of her uncharacteristic novels, as it is actually GOOD.

Ta ta for now, I will update when I finish my next essay...

there are no nose laughs involved in essay writing

Ah. I love taking breaks from 5+ hours of essay writing. I love English, and I love being an English Specialist, but I hate writing essays, especially 3 in 3 weeks. While it is, I admit, my fault for leaving them until now, I have been doing a lot of thought, research and outlines on these essays - it's now just a matter of writing. My current project is on a book full of myths, and it was our job to pick one aspect of the book and discuss it. Easy? Hell no. Having taken two mythology courses last year, I had a good idea of where the myths strayed from their original stories, but most of the people in the class are absolutely lost. A typical question on our class's discussion board is "what's the book ABOUT?", or "is (insert one of millions of episodes in the book) supposed to represent a myth? I DUN GETTIT" (there are a lot of spelling, grammar and common sense mistakes on the discussion board). Anyway. I'm almost finished: 1 paragraph, conclusion and editing. Hoorrah. On to essay #2: 1984 vs. North Korea

    Happy 3rd Birthday, Emma!
